Memorial Day Remembrance by Keith Self

May 22nd, 2008

Citizens,

Memorial Day is Monday.

A day of remembrance of those who have died in military service to our nation, Memorial Day has been observed for 138 years.

Memorial Day is always fresh because our freedom requires sacrifice from every generation. Today most of you reading this letter personally know an American who served or is serving in our Armed Forces, many in harm’s way today. Celina’s remembrance, for example, will honor Peter Burks, a hometown son who died in Iraq last year. This is not only history, this is also now.

I encourage you to include one of the many …

THe Drumbeat for Higher Taxes by Keith Self

May 22nd, 2008

The constant drumbeat for higher taxes continues. Many regional and local government and quasi-government organizations are developing detailed plans to lobby the state legislature for higher taxes in several different areas: a new transit tax, higher sales tax, higher gas tax, higher property tax, and even a new hospital taxing district that I will discuss at the end of the blog. Even with the current state surplus, there seems to be no end to the appetite for higher taxes. This is not some far-away effort in Austin, it is right here in North Texas. As you watch media reports, you …

New Business Tax

May 9th, 2008

Starting in 2008, Texas businesses are subject to the revised franchise tax, also known as the margins tax. This new tax is a result of House Bill 3, which the Legislature passed in May 2006. House Bill 3 restructured the state’s existing franchise tax to expand the tax to include more businesses and change how the tax is calculated.

I have strongly opposed this tax since it was originally introduced during a special session in 2006. I am concerned about the financial burden this tax places on small businesses. Additionally, this tax is extremely complicated and time-consuming …

Today, the Dallas Morning News critiques the issue further, while stating Cheney’s response “makes the most reasoned arguments in favor.” The issues also blasts Frisco Family First stating they use fear tactics. Read the DMN article here.
